Latin Studies

I’ve immersed myself in Latin studies. This is my sixth year—I really love it. In that time, I’ve learned the language but so much more. Latin is history, literature, culture, religion, art and a link between the ancient world and the modern world. Latin class teaches us Rome’s culture and historical figures as we translate and read ancient texts. My favorite Latin poet is Virgil, who wrote the epic poem The Aeneid. This tale lays the foundation for two millennia of hero stories while using literary components still in use today, such as metaphors and allusions. Latin is woven into most languages of the world and is the foundation for a many of our English words. Last year, I was fortunate enough to visit Rome. There were Latin inscriptions carved in stone everywhere. It was fun to be able to read them all and translate them for my family.

We saw this latin inscription carved in stone in Rome. It is the only surviving remenant that bears the name Pontius Pilate.
We visited the caves at Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered.
