In addition to the studies and activities of a busy senior year of high school, and in an effort to further my knowledge about the rental home business, I worked as a paid extern at a property management company. With 40 hours per month of hands-on experience, we did the basics of house restoration such as wood repair, flooring, painting, cleaning, yard work and landscaping. I also attended a weekly lecture to learn about subjects relating to real estate such as property ownership, mortgages, financing, taxes and other related topics. This experience has been very educational, especially in understanding the value of goods and services, and their costs and the balance of what can be done by oneself versus the work that should be done by a professional. With the knowledge gained through this externship, I better understand how to acquire and maintain rental property and someday, my own home.
