The SMART Program is a free tutoring service for elementary and middle school students. SMART stands for Students Mentoring, Assisting, Reinforcing and Teaching. It was founded by my sister Laurel and me in 2011, after we recognized that our fellow students needed better access to academic instruction beyond the classroom. It is a student-run program that utilizes the knowledge of older students to teach younger ones. In 2016 I became director over the entire program. My role is to enlist tutors and organize their pairing with students on the requested academic subjects, as well as, being a participating tutor for all subjects. My younger sister Lily, and younger brother Mark, are both tutors in the program and will take over as director next year when I leave for college. SMART is in its 8th year, and we have helped hundreds of students over thousands of sessions. SMART makes a difference.
